Vianney, Jean-Baptiste Marie [Curé d’Ars]

Vianney, Jean-Baptiste Marie [Curé d’Ars]
(1786–1859)
   Saint.
Vianney was born near Lyons, France. From an early age he was determined to become a priest, but his progress was hindered by compulsory military service and by his lack of Latin. Eventually he was ordained in 1815 and three years later he was appointed to the remote parish of Ars. There he became a famous spiritual director and he attracted a huge number of followers. Towards the end of his life, he spent almost all his time hearing confessions. He was canonised in 1925 and is now the patron saint of parish priests.
